Mix tradition with high-flying fun at Yawgoog Scout Reservation, Narragansett Council

At 100 years young, Yawgoog Scout Reservation isn’t slowing down. It is doing just the opposite, in fact. Founded in 1916, Yawgoog (the second G is silent) offers a tradition-packed week of fun. Some 6,500 Scouts — most from out of council — head to Rockville, R.I., each summer for ropes courses, aquatics activities and friendly competition.

Yawgoog embodies Scouting, which explains why parts of the 2012 film Moonrise Kingdom, about fictional “Khaki Scouts,” were shot there.

There’s plenty to do on Yawgoog’s 1,800 acres of forest and lakes, including:

  • High and low ropes courses in an idyllic setting among the trees. The courses strengthen self-esteem and encourage teamwork.
  • A giant lake for sailing, snorkeling, swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking and canoeing.
  • Friendly inter-troop competitions. In the dining hall, troops challenge other troops to volleyball or pool basketball.
