Outdoor lovers know that the best way to get from Point A to Point B isn’t always a straight line. So for my trip from Troy, N.Y., to Concord, N.H., I’m ignoring the GPS unit and taking the scenic route. Yes, it’s taking me an extra hour to reach my destination, but I’m betting the breathtaking views will justify the detour.

Sure enough, about three hours into the five-hour trip, I spot this vista as I cross a bridge. I pull off at the nearby picnic area for lunch, and, after taking time to gorge myself on a sandwich, carrot sticks, chips, and cookies, I walk over to marvel at the sight that caught my eye. The river, probably cut from a glacier thousands of years ago, roars about 150 feet below. On each side, a colorful palette of trees signals the arrival of fall.

As I return to my car, I realize that this would be a great place to bring my troop. But first I’ll need to know: Where Am I?

The deadline has passed to enter the November-December 2010 Where Am I? reader contest.

Congratulations to our winner, Bob Manfredo of Bethel Park, Pa. Bob correctly told us that the mystery location was Quechee Gorge in Vermont. Bob will receive a $100 BSA Supply Group gift card. The winner was selected at random from a pool of 653 correct responses.
