When my friends see this photograph, they invariably have two questions. First, they ask if it really is a photograph and not some sort of abstract painting. And when I assure them that this place exists—and not just in the mind of Salvador Dalí—they follow up by asking where it’s located and how this geological wonder was formed.

The where is easy: Just head to the long, straight border between the nation’s 45th and 48th states. The Native American tribe that owns the area operates tours there to give visitors a closer look. And the picturesque formations? They’re the result of rushing water that, over time, created the “flowing” effect on the rocks. That means the canyon might look different today than it will five years from now.

Still not convinced that this place exists? Plan a visit yourself, after you tell us: Where Am I?
