Find your Rocky Mountain adventure at this camp

The mountains are calling, and you must go to Rocky Mountain High Adventure Base in southern Colorado. Your wild week begins at arrival on Sunday. What happens next is entirely up to you and your Scouts or Venturers.

Perhaps you’ll raft down the rip-roaring Arkansas River, experiencing a range of whitewater from Class I (mild) to Class IV (wild). The journey includes Browns Canyon, one of the most popular whitewater sections in the country, and Bighorn Sheep Canyon, offering frequent sightings of the animals that are the symbol of Rocky Mountain National Park.

Or maybe a mountain-biking experience is more your troop or crew’s speed. Enjoy one or more guided half-day treks and be back at Rocky Mountain High Adventure Base in time for dinner. Sometimes the ride is flat and smooth. Other times it’s hilly and rugged. All the time you’re riding at elevations approaching 9,000 feet. It’s no pedal through the park.

Or could it be backpacking that’s your jam? Rocky Mountain High Adventure Base has you covered there as well. Guided and self-guided treks come in a range of difficulties, and many include one or more 14ers — mountain peaks above 14,000 feet in elevation.

For troops with younger Scouts who aren’t quite ready for the high-adventure experience, the nearby San Isabel Scout Ranch offers dozens of merit badges and the Baden-Powell first-year camper program. Many troops split up, dropping some Scouts and leaders at San Isabel while the rest continue two hours northwest to Rocky Mountain High Adventure Base.
