AS FROSTY AIR ICES over my ski goggles, a dribble of sweat falls down my forehead. Whew, snowshoeing is hard work. My feet sink deep into the sugarlike powder when I stop to take in my view.

Snow is a fact of life for this remote national park—it receives an annual snowfall of 44 feet! But the snow doesn’t deter hikers’ plans for adventure. In fact, the park’s summertime roads easily convert to daytime snowshoe and cross-country skiing trails.

Cotton-ball fluff covers hemlock and pine marten forests surrounding a marked overlook. I shuffle my way toward the marker and gaze into a blue, watery abyss. The waveless shoreline of a sunken lake comes into view. This lake—1,943-feet deep and, thus, unfrozen in the bitter cold of winter—is only visible when the clouds clear. Otherwise, the white reflection of clouds makes the water difficult to see.

Magical, right? The wondrous lake harbors even more appeal from its lone island—a once-volcanic cinder cone that rose from the lake’s floor.

Volcano? Snowfall? Wait a second …  Where Am I?

NEED ANOTHER CLUE? Here’s a hint: Merlin would be happy to call this island home.
