PLAN YOUR ESCAPE from the everyday trip by encouraging youth leaders to schedule a visit to Montana High Adventure Base, nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. No two trips are alike, thanks to a highly customizable program that includes four or five days hiking established trails along 4,000-foot valley floors and 9,000-foot mountain summits.
The backcountry treks straddle the Continental Divide, with crews helping design an itinerary that fits the members’ previous backpacking experience. Crews of eight to 13 Scouts select either the basic package (base camp meals, lodging and some program) or the premium package (all that, plus backcountry meals, airport transportation, gear and additional program activities).
Before and after the trek, Scouts enjoy the front country, trying programs such as:
“Lay of the Land,” an intro to the region’s history, ecosystem and wildlife
“Be Bear Aware,” teaching safe behavior around Montana’s black and grizzly bears
“Tracks, Scat & Signs,” a guide to identifying traces from elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, cougars and small mammals
Fly fishing, including the chance to dine on that day’s catch
