  1. Very cool and inspiring thoughts you shared with all of us! Thank you so very much for all you do!!!!!!

  2. Wonderful and, as always, extremely relevant message Mike! Thank you for being the embodiment of what it means to be a Boy Scout!

  3. Well Said! My greatest pride comes from being witness to one of my 75 Scouts putting to practice what they’ve learned in Scouting. Rank and awards are just a bonus. Thanks Mike Rowe for your words and inspiration and to you brother as well.

  4. Finally getting around to commenting on this.

I greatly enjoyed Mike Rowe’s speech. It has been over a year and I still think about it.

First off I applaud Mike receiving the distinguished eagle scout award. He is the poster child of what that award is all about.

In Mike’s speech he mentions “Scouts In Action”. He talks about how we should be screaming from the mountain tops about what these scouts have done. The world needs to know about SIA. We don’t do a good job at this.

Boys Life is nice but it is preaching to the choir (Scouts and Scouters read boys life, that’s about it).

Scouting for Adventure does not do it either. I watched one episode and had enough of it. Way too much product placement not to mention not following the guide to safe scouting.

I have a feeling “are you tougher then a boy scout”, will be worse. Reality TV is anything but.

The closest example of what Mike was asking for that I have seen was not even produced by BSA. I was watching a show called “I should have been dead”. In one episode it showed a group of scouts lost in the desert (I didn’t catch the entire show so I don’t know why), and what they had to do in order to survive (in fact one scout died). The resourcefulness and bravery the scouts demonstrated was inspiring.

Let us find ways of spotlighting these extraordinary scouts to people outside of scouting.
