These Scouts laugh in the face of sub-freezing temperatures—and line up early to do so. That’s why all five weekends of winter treks at Mount Norris Scout Reservation sell out months in advance—even though January brings average temperatures between 2 and 25 degrees. The chilly climate is no surprise, considering the camp sits a half-hour south of Vermont’s Canadian border.

Rugged Scouts are eager to pull on another layer and leave their heated cabins to enjoy these outside activities:

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on a route through camp;
Ice fishing, rifle shooting, archery, and shotgun shooting; and
Winter skills training, including patrol games.

By summer, the snow’s gone, but the Scouts aren’t. In addition to traditional summer camp activities, Mount Norris offers “Frontiers Camp,” a popular program showcasing the activities of an 1830s-style mountain man American frontier rendezvous.
