Claytor Lake Aquatics Base, Blue Ridge Mountains Council – Radford, Va.

There are no TV cameras around, but Scouts can still get plenty of airtime at Claytor Lake Aquatics Base, a new lakeside facility in Pulaski County, Va. The 4,500-acre reservoir is about a 40-minute drive from Blacksburg, Va., home of Virginia Tech University, or a two-hour drive from The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve.

The new buildings, seen above, serve as the dry-land home base for visiting units. From there, the water becomes a Scouting playground with these activities:

– Wakeboarding, waterskiing, and motorboating to get the adrenaline flowing.

– Kayaking or piloting an Olympic-style rowboat for when it’s time to slow down.

– Scuba certification for Scouts who prefer underwater fun.

Most of the activities are for adults and Venturing-age youth, so make sure your guys and girls meet the camp’s and the BSA’s requirements before planning a trip. Once you’re ready, find more details at brmcreservation.org/summer_camp.htm.

  1. My troop was here years ago, the boys, all in their mid 20s now, still talk about it! We are from the Jersey Shore Council. We go to a different camp every year.
